KPIs That Drive Decisions

You're Tracking Numbers — But Are They the Right Ones?
Most growing businesses track data. Revenue, headcount, enquiries. The challenge is that having data and having insight are not the same thing.
A KPI dashboard should answer one question: Where should we focus right now? If it doesn't do that, it's just reporting.
What makes a good KPI?
It drives action. If a number changes and no one knows what to do about it, it's not a KPI — it's just data.
It's owned by someone. Every meaningful metric needs a name next to it.
It's leading, not just lagging. Revenue is a lagging indicator. Pipeline, conversion rate, and quote value are leading — they tell you what's coming.
It's simple enough to review weekly. If your dashboard takes an hour to prepare, it won't be used consistently.
At Cross & Co, we help businesses design KPI frameworks that are useful and genuinely decision-driving — not just impressive-looking spreadsheets.
